Dunrobin Castle a Jewel in the Highlands

The largest of Scotlands great houses with 189 rooms and award winning gardens the castle resembles a French Chateau and is one of Britain’s oldest, continuously inhabited houses. Home of Lord Strathnaver, Earl of Sutherland, and his family,  the castle is located in Golspie in the Highlands.

The castles origins lie in the middle ages but  the majority of the present building was added by Sir Charles Barry between 1835 and 1850. There has been a number of  occupants since then including being a naval hospital during the First World war and  a boys boarding school from 1965 to 1972. Today visitors begin at the grand entrance and main staircase which leads to the beautiful state rooms on the first floor. These include the dining room, set with the family silver, and the library which has over 10.000 books. Your journey now takes you to some of the smaller rooms in the older areas of the castle and gives a fascinating insight into the life of the many servants who worked here over many years.

Outside in the grounds is a fascinating and ‘unusual’ Victorian Museum, not for the feint hearted! An intimate falconry display can be enjoyed in the nearby garden.

The beautifully laid out formal gardens, with their Main Parterre, Croquet lawns and Pyramid Garden are a delight.

There is ample parking space, so if you are in your campervan or motorhome you will have no difficulty and access from the main road is very good.
